Gabriel heard the outcry back at the camp and abandoned any pretense of trying to make his way through the brush silently. The branch he’d sharpened and retrieved once he’d made it out of sight now felt foolish as the reality of pursuit by heavily armed guerilla fighters set in. He peered ahead in the darkness and barely made out a trail in the faint moonlight that filtered through the branches of the trees.
Flashlight beams flickered behind him, and he took off at a run. The dress loafers he’d worn to the dinner didn’t provide much traction on moist leaves and mud. He nearly went down a few moments later and barely caught himself against a tree trunk before pushing off and scrambling deeper into the foliage, the trail barely more than a faint thinning of the brush ahead.
The kidnappers weren’t making any attempt to be quiet as they crashed through the bushes, and Gabriel cursed between clenched teeth at how little of a head start he’d gotten. He’d hoped to go unnoticed for at least an hour if he took off on his own, but now…now he’d be lucky if he wasn’t shot in the back before he could make it to the lake.
Gunshots rang out behind him, and bullets shredded the leaves to his right. He ducked lower and pushed himself to his limit as the shooting stopped and an angry voice rang out, scolding the shooter and ordering him to save ammo.
Gabriel veered left at a particularly thick clump of bushes, pushed a hanging vine out of the way, and continued in the direction of the water, although he couldn’t be sure – his plan had assumed time to get his bearings and maintain a steady course, not zigzagging through the wilds like a hare with hounds on its tail. He paused and heard the gunmen pounding through the brush toward him, an occasional flare of light through the leaves all the evidence he needed that they were gaining on him.
His breath was coming in rasps as he altered direction again, and then his foot caught on a root and he went down, the wind knocked out of him when he slammed onto the ground with a grunt. He fought to regain his footing and nearly jumped when a voice whispered to him from the spread of a nearby tree.
“Get over here and grab the straps. Hurry. They’re almost on top of you.”
